I have a fun Get This Look for you today! It is definitely on trend with the Mid Century design vibes you’ve been seeing lately with a bit of a twist. What was fun about this project is I really got to mix high and low pieces. What that means is there are a few more pricier pieces blended in with more reasonable ones. I bet you can’t tell one from the other though.

This client had a somewhat traditional base in their new home with soft grey walls, lots of white molding and dark hardwood floors. Not a typical backdrop for someone wanting a Mid Century design. They wanted this space to feel comfortable and casual with a few pieces that weren’t quite so expected. Adding a little bit of a ‘Funk’ factor.

With modern day Mid Century Design majorly trending right now, inspiration photos are not too hard to come by. When I think Mid Century design or when my clients mention wanting that look in their own homes I like to take more of an eclectic approach then a minimalistic one. I like to mix warm and dark wood tones, different textures and materials and bring in some fun patterns and colors. This gives it a more comfortable and homey vibe as well as from a sourcing perspective, being able to mix quality products as well as stylish ones. Mid Century style furniture tends to be smaller in scale, which doesn’t always work with large living spaces like the one for this client. I really looked at inspiration photos for mixing textures and arm styles, and how to bring in the elements and style the client wanted while still using properly scaled and designed furnishings for the room.

Since I really wanted to play with textures and tones in this space, I landed on a leather sofa. Im obsessed with leather, but typically only like it as an accent. In this case, we made it the center piece for the design. A lighter and fun pattern in the rug plays well with the warmth of the leather, while contrasting with the dark wood floors. I brought in just a little bit of that ‘Funk’ factor the client was looking for with colorful pillows and lamps.

We really wanted to make this space warm and inviting. It may not be your traditional Mid Century Design, but the details definitely play into this style that the client was looking for.
